FAQs

What size containers do you sell?

We offer our paint in gallon and 5 gallon cans.

Do you sell samples?

No, we do not have samples available; however, we do have hand-painted color cards that are available for purchase through the website, at a nominal cost. We also have a color palette area on our website that allows for viewing of the colors in a larger format. This area also allows colors to be shown side by side to determine if they work well together.

I see your colors online, do you have color card samples?

We do have hand-painted color card samples available for purchase through our website. There is a nominal charge for these samples, but well worth the investment to ensure you select the perfect color.

Should I order from GPP or can I purchase the paint locally? And do they carry all the colors?

We support our local retailers, as they are the frontline for our paint. However, they might not necessarily carry all of the colors Green Planet Paints® offers. Ordering directly from the factory allows you a greater variety of color selections/full palette of color selections if the retailer doesn’t carry the entire line.

What is the coverage of the paint?

One gallon of paint covers 350 to 400 sq ft. We recommend two coats of paint and a primer prior to the first coat application.

How do you apply GPP?

GPP can be applied with any brush, roller or sprayer in similar fashion to any other conventional paint.

Can GPP be sprayed?

Yes

What surfaces are appropriate for GPP?

Like any conventional paint, application on plastic and metals and various unconventional items, is not recommended nor is it created for these type of surfaces. This paint is best used in its originally intended form

interior walls. If you wish to paint an unconventional item, we recommend using a paint that is created specifically for that particular surface.

Do I need to prime before painting?

Yes. We recommend priming prior to application of the paint, particularly for new construction. This primer coat will ensure a polished, beautiful finish. We offer a primer that you can purchase for the first layer of your paint project.

Will this paint cover gloss paint?

If attempting to cover a semi-gloss or gloss surface, you will need to lightly sand the surface to minimize the gloss . We recommend placing a primer coat once sanded and prior to painting.

Is the paint harmful to my children during application and/or after painting?

No, Green Planet Paints allows you to maintain a safe environment for your children even if they are in the home while the application is being made to walls. Any odor you smell should not be harmful to you or your family.

The paint has a smell – why is this?

Our paints have a unique smell that is based in the soy resin. While it has a smell, it is not toxic. These are zero VOC, Bio based paints. The smell will dissipate over a period of about a week, depending on temperature and humidity. Using plant-based raw materials means that there is natural variation in the chemistry making up our product –

which results in a different set of smells, which humans sense at parts per million.

I’m chemically sensitive – will this paint be OK for me?

While our paints are simple products, we understand that there are a wide range of chemical sensitivities and allergies. We recommend testing the paint in small-scale application before committing to a larger project.
As it applies to the interior Alkyd paint line only, in the past the old alkyd soap resin may have had reactions with a few industrial contractor grade paint products containing high solvents VAE’s and EVA’s. It was our assessment that this reaction may have cause toxins to exhaust off into a room if the reaction took place. If you test for this issue and find a chemical smell coming from the test area within 24 hours, we recommend applying the Agri-Primer first and allowing the primer to dry for not less than 36 hours before painting the interior alkyd paint over the primed surface. This possible reaction issue was addressed in 2016 and a new resin was developed that has not displayed these issues in over 100 independent tests. We are hoping the past issue will no longer be a problem moving forward.

How long will it take to dry?

The amount of time for the wall to dry and the time in which the odor dissipates is dependent on the temperature and relative humidity in which it is applied.

How many coats do I need?

Two (2) coats are recommended.

Can the paint be color matched?

We can create custom colors at our factory for a small surcharge.

If I need to order more paint, will the color match the first batch?

Not necessarily. Like any other paint you purchase, there is potential for slight variation. While small in scale, the difference can appear quite drastic when painted on a wall. We, much like every other paint distributor or retailer, can not guarantee an exact color match between various batches of paint. To avoid this color mis-matching, we recommend the mixing of the multiple cans to create a cohesive blend in the event that the multiple cans were not purchased from the same ‘batch’.

Is this paint acrylic or latex?

The paint is neither acrylic or latex. It is a soy-based alkyd. Agri-Paint is a water born natural acrylic and does not contain the same petrochemical components as a latex acrylic.

If this paint has 0.01 grams per liter or less of VOCs, how is it different than other zero voc products?

VOC levels are broad in spectrum and the way in which the ratings apply. The term zero VOC is defined by the EPA as less than 5 grams per liter. Our paint is much lower than what you will find in other products. What we can offer and how we differentiate ourselves from other zero voc products is in our minimally chemically altered paint and plant/mineral foundation. Additionally, we place significant emphasis on our overall contribution to sustainability.
